San Francisco, athe \"City by the Bay\", is only 49 Square miles yet is made up of many vastly different neighborhoods and terrain. Getting around to all the different sites can be a challenge for anyone, however most would agree not to rent a car. Parking is extremely difficult and can be quite expensive. There are a myriad of parking signs on the streets, which can be rather complicated to understand. Vehicles displaying placards can be ticketed and towed if parked improperly. Wheelchair riders can get to most sightseeing spots by wheeling, however depending on your route, you\'ll likely encounter steep hills. The underground trains, most buses, and plenty of curbcuts make getting around very easy. Ramped taxis are also available. See transportation. A word of caution: San Franciscans are notorious for running red lights so wait a little before crossing the street. \"The coldest winter I ever spent was one summer in San Francisco\", is a quote often attributed to Mark Twain. Truth is, nobody knows who really said it. Regardless of its origins, do take the advice seriously. Unlike most places, summers in San Francisco are unpredictable and often cool and foggy. The best weather months are April, May, and September through November. The rainy season is December through March. The best clothes to pack are things that can be layered. One part of the city can be basking in the sun while another part is covered in fog. Visit the San Francisco Visitor Information Center, Lower level, Hallidie Plaza, 900 Market. The elevator is located on Market St. near Mason St. or check their web site.

Be sure to check with your hotel ahead of time to see if they have secured parking. Daily parking can be expensive and can add significantly to your bill.
Oakland International Airport is much smaller than San Francisco and is easier to negotiate. All of the major airlines have ramped jetways from the plane to the terminal. To get to San Francisco take the Air BART shuttle to the Colliseum BART station. Exit at any San Francisco stop. All Air BART shuttles are accessible and run every 15 minutes. Pick up at center island.
Car rental companies are located at the terminal so you don't need to take a shuttle to pick up your car.
Disabled accessible parking is located at the terminal by entering the short term parking lot. Visitors with a placard pay the long term rates.
San Francisco International Airport is located 14 miles south of San Francisco. In general you will find good accessibility throughout the airport. All of the major airlines have ramped jetways from the plane to the terminal. Smaller commuter aircraft may require boarding by stairs from the tarmac. Check with the individual airlines regarding their boarding policies.
There is a brochure describing access and services. It is also available in large print. To request the brochure in advance call 650.794.4001 or write to SFIA, PO Box 8097, San Francisco, CA 94128. The guide is also available at the information booth located on the lower level, baggage area.
Disabled accessible parking is located at the airport in the Hourly Lot,
Long Term Lot, and the Valet area. (Be advised that there is no longer a disabled discount at the Hourly Lot, formerly known as the Short Term Lot. The daily rate at the Hourly Lot is $35 per day). If you are not able to pull out a ticket from the machine or if you have a raised roof on your van, proceed to the valet parking area.

All stations are equipped with elevators. These elevators frequently break down so it is highly advised to call ahead to make sure the elevator is operational at your destination station.
There is level access onto all trains however, there can be a large gap between the platform and the train which small front wheels can get stuck in. Some people advise backing on and off the trains.
All platforms have raised areas for detection by people who are blind or visually impaired. There is no announcement made informing you which train has arrived, it's only a visual announcement. Once on the train the conductor announces the stop.
The elevator signs are not clearly marked on the platforms but are generally are located at either end of the station.
